The Juried Exhibition - Afterword

Further to my last blog post I decided not to alter my artist book in any way other than just to add an Afterword onto the back of the box.

In my eyes The Juried Exhibition project is now complete and I am happy I did it. I have forgiven myself for missing the deadline and it is time to move on to other projects.

I am currently working on a stitch project I started at a workshop I attended on Monday 18 May 2026 tutored by textile artist Catherine McDonald of Mallee Textiles from Christchurch, New Zealand. She was a merchant at the Taranaki Quilt Festival 2026 put on by Taranaki Patchworkers and Quilters held in Stratford, New Zealand the weekend prior. I took a day of work and sat stitching with fellow creatives and was pleasantly surprised when a stitching friend also turned up at the class. I was not aware she had enrolled.

The workshop was a mix of machine and hand stitching on a piece of Catherine's lovely hand dyed fabric. She provided the fabric and a few threads to start you off but it was totally your choice as to the stitches and threads used. I think I have an idea of what stitches I will use to finish the project. I also found a little brass ring and couldn't resist binding it and adding it to the piece.

I am thinking I will use the finished piece on a book cover or on the lid of a hand made box.

The Quilt Festival was fabulous with so many beautiful quilts on display. While I am not really a quilter and I am leaning more towards book arts I still love textile arts and found a lot of inspiration.

I was particularly inspired by some nature printing and eco printing pieces I saw by textile artist Jennifer Patterson and some art quilt pieces by Dianne Southey.
